kindness

When in doubt, be kind. That’s all I’ve got.

When the world is angry, confused and feels like it is about to implode, what is one person to do about it?

Margaret Mead is quoted as saying

Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher, can change the world. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Margaret Mead

I want peace. I want understanding. I want tolerance. I want love to prevail.

And what do I do about it?

I smile and say hello to everyone I meet on my walks.

I grow a front yard garden and have plans to share some plants and seeds this spring. I talk to our neighbours. I try to stay in contact with family and friends.

That’s all I’ve got.

It is so small and perhaps even pathetic.

Worse, I am a very flawed human. I preach kindness and then get irritable with those closest to me.

But what can we do, except throw back the bed sheets and get up and try all over again, day after day? We can only press reset and renew our efforts to better follow the three laws of changing the world:

  1. Be Kind
  2. Be Kind
  3. Be Kind

It’s all I’ve got. Maybe it’s enough.
